Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor, G-CSF

  • Indications
  1. Chemotherapy-Induced Neutropenia
  2. Neutropenia Prophylaxis with Chemotherapy initiation
    1. Febrile Neutropenia risk >=20%
    2. History of neutropenic complications with prior treatments
  3. Neutropenia with recurrent severe infections (e.g. Periodontal Disease, Cellulitis, Pneumonia, abscess)
  • Mechanism
  1. Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor (G-CSF) is an endogenous Cytokine
    1. Modulates the production, differentiation and function Neutrophilic Granulocyte progenitors
  2. G-CSF is endogenously produced by Monocytes, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells
  3. G-CSF activates Granulocyte production via binding specific cell surface receptors
  • Adverse Effects
  1. Serious
    1. Longterm malignancy risk (esp. in Severe Congenital Neutropenia)
  2. Common
    1. Bone pain
    2. Arthralgias
    3. Myalgias
    4. Headache
